Self-Organisation Can Explain the Mapping of Angular Whisker Deflections in the Barrel Cortex

چکیده
A topographic mapping of angular whisker deflections has recently been discovered in the barrel cortex of rats (Andermann & Moore, 2006). Characteristics of this map suggest that it could emerge in post-natal development, through self-organisation under a Hebbian learning regime. This hypothesis was implemented in a self-organising computational model, from which a remarkably similar mapping emerges when whisker deflections are correlated during training. The model is used to make novel predictions of the real system, and work towards a more sophisticated input system is documented.

Representation of tactile scenes in the rodent barrel cortex.
After half a century of research, the sensory features coded by neurons of the rodent barrel cortex remain poorly understood. Still, views of the sensory representation of whisker information are increasingly shifting from a labeled line representation of single-whisker deflections to a selectivity for specific elements of the complex statistics of the multi-whisker deflection patterns that tak...

Local circuitry within layer IV whisker-related barrels is preferentially sensitive to thalamic population firing synchrony, and neurons respond most vigorously to stimuli, such as high-velocity whisker deflections, that evoke it. Field potential recordings suggest that thalamic barreloid neurons having similar angular preferences fire synchronously. To examine whether angular tuning of cortica...

Introduction: It is believed that Locus Coeruleus (LC) influences the sensory information processing. However, its role in cortical surround inhibitory mechanism is not understood. In this experiment, using controlled mechanical displacement of whiskers we investigated the effect of phasic electrical stimulation of LC on response of layer V barrel cortical neurons in anesthetized rat. Methods: ...

Response modulation by prior sensory stimulation is a common property of cortical neurons. The degree to which effects are specific to the adapting stimulus provides insights into properties of the underlying circuitry. Here, we examined the effects of an adapting whisker deflection's angle on the angular tuning of layer IV barrel neurons and their major input source, thalamic barreloid neurons...
متن کاملEffect of sensory deprivation and Locus Coeruleus (LC) electrical stimulation on the response properties of layer IV barrel cortex neurons in male rats
Introduction: Barrel cortex of rodents is responsible for sensory information processing from muzzle whiskers. Locus coeruleus (LC) as the main source of norepinephrine (NE) in the cortex, is effective on the sensory information processing. Methods: Rats were divided to 2 groups. One group underwent sensory deprivation (P4) and the other group served as control and did not undergo sensory d...
